"fact that Wassell now owns the Lucas"
not a fact . Wassell have bought a licence to market Lucas classsic bike products, lucas is owned TRW Automotive
Replies :
That's splitting hairs if I ever heard it and isn't correct anyhow. They are marketing parts from wherever they like (China) in Lucas boxes and paying a royalty to TRW. Lucas hasn't made a headlamp shell, condenser or contact set for a British bike in years.
Concur with John...that's splitting hairs. There should be disclosure on where parts are manufactured, in my opinion. If they have to put country of origin on a friggin T-shirt, it ought to be required on a motor vehilce part! If anyone watched 60 Minutes a week or so ago, the expose on Lumber Liquidators here in the USA was enlightening...example of what companies will do to make more money...and to hell with the buyers. I have bought Chinese made items, and that is fine, but I knew up front what I was buying...and from whom.
When I first moved here 30 years ago I needed to buy a toilet. We went to the local hardware store and found a pretty nice one with "American Standard" as a brand name. I thought that implied a quality, American made item. When we looked a little closer after getting home it had a tiny little stamp on the back of the tank which said "Made in Guatemala".
So much for buying American.
But surely Guatemala is in America just as much as are the US ;)
John, you seem to be agreeing with what West said... TRW does own the brand name and is, apparently, licencing it to Wassell. Wassell will have some "latitude" in how/where they source their parts. Why anyone would compain about this is a little beyond me - people have whinged since the year dot about Lucas. "Prince of Darkness" and "gentlemen not going motoring about at night " and all that crap. If Wassell are making a true Lucas product then perhaps we should not expect too much.
