A
Automatic Advance Unit
This unit, attached to the RHS of the exhaust
camshaft, advances the timing spark as the engine revs rise. An earlier spark is
required at higher revs because there is less time for complete
combustion to take place. It operates using bob-weights that fly outward under
centrifugal force as the engine speed increases, they return to their original
position by means of small springs. The unit wears with age; the springs loose
their correct tension and the bob-weights can stick. Usually replaced
(along with the ignition points) by a no-maintenance electronic ignition module
such as Boyer or Lucas Rita.

Viton-tipped Soft tipped
carburettor float needles - an aftermarket replacement for the original nylon
float needles. Made of a Viton tip in a brass body. The original nylon float needles eventually degrade
to the point where they do not shut off the fuel when the float rises to the 'full' position.
Using the Viton-tipped needles often requires a reset of the float level due to different shut-off
characteristics due to the heavier weight of the brass body.
